Nonlinear Production Sound Recording
As of August, 2004, all manufacturers that had announced
intentions to build nonlinear production sound recorders are now delivering
them, and all are being used in productions.
Trew Audio has been involved with the support of nonlinear production sound recording for several years now. Through our sales and rental departments, we have supplied nonlinear recording equipment to many customers for a very impressive list of productions.
Many producers are now insisting on nonlinear production sound tracks. Virtually all postproduction facilities that cater to long-form production (features, episodics, TV movies…) are now capable of accepting nonlinear media (though some may still need to buy a Fostex DV-40 or require a trip to Radio Shack to buy a flash card reader or DVD drive).
Post houses specializing in short-form production (i.e. commercials) are now getting on board. In short, a post facility that cannot accept nonlinear production sound tracks will soon be like those that could not accept a timecode DAT a few years ago. In other words, there will be no such thing.
This page contains links to information about all of the available nonlinear recorders designed for Film and Television production sound and examples of actual use in production.
